Pre-defense of master’s theses in english took place at the Unesco chair

On June 16, 2021, at the international UNESCO Chair of NSUACE (Sibstrin) “Environmentally safety technologies of environmental management and water consumption”, a pre-defense of master's theses in English took place. The event was attended by the leaders and members of the UNESCO Chair and the Institute of International Affairs, as well as the undergraduates of the UNESCO Chair of the first year of study.

Master Degree students: Pavel Kozlov, Elizaveta Latysh and Alexander Pogrebnoy defeated the presentation of their master's works before the commission under the chairmanship of the head of the UNESCO Chair, Rector of NSUACE (Sibstrin) Yu.L. Skolubovich. As a result of the pre-defense, the commission positively assessed the results of studies conducted by undergraduates and their level of proficiency in English.

The theses of Master students were devoted to the problems of the water disposal system of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District.  In particular, undergraduates studied the water supply and sanitation system of the cities of Muravlenko, Gubkinsky and Noyabrsk, where students were during the pre-diploma practice, and proposed options for its improvement taking into account the advanced technologies in this area. All works were carried out under the supervision of UNESCO Chair Professor and the Departments Water Supply and Sanitation of NSUACE (Sibstrin),G.T. Ambrossova.

“Unfortunately, there are big problems with sewage treatment plants in the northern regions. I carried out the work on the survey of treatment facilities in the city of Muravlenko, both old and new unfinished facilities, studied the project design documentation, and made all the necessary calculations. Based on the analysis, a number of recommendations were proposed to correct some of the shortcomings that are in the project. The calculations confirm that the technological scheme used there will not meet the requirements for the degree of wastewater treatment”, said master student, Elizaveta Latysh.

Despite the difficulties associated with the coronavirus pandemic and borders closure, the director of the Institute for International Affairs, NSUACE (Sibstrin), the deputy head of the UNESCO Chair, N.V. Sineeva noted that master students were actively involved in international events in English: “On the one hand, the borders closure canceled meetings offline, but at the same time made it possible to hold a large number of meetings in online format with our foreign and Russian partners, as well as participate in internal events held by UNESCO. The intensity of events in the English language at our was quite dense: master students participated in two round tables in English, lecture course conducted by Uwe Gaisbauer, a two-week international educational school based on UNESCO Chair, various webinars and conferences”.

During the training the master students successfully completed the course “Applied Aerodynamics” conducted by Dr. Uwe Gaisbauer, the head of the gas dynamics laboratory at the Institute of Aero and gas dynamics at the University of Stuttgart, and the international scientific and practical school “Environmental issues in Architecture and Civil Engineering Spheres” in English. They made presentations in English on their scientific research at several round tables, including the XIV International Scientific and Technical Conference of NSUACE (Sibstrin) “Current Issues of Architecture and Civil Engineering”. In addition, the master students participated in the arrangement of the International Laboratory named after A.F. Poryadin, which was opened at UNESCO Chair of NSUACE (Sibstrin) in March this year. The modern laboratory will provide the future master students with the opportunity to conduct their research within the university.

As a result of the defense, all master students, in addition to the main diploma, will receive a certificate of study at UNESCO Chair in English.
