Novosibirsk State University of Architecture and Civil engineering (Sibstrin) hosted the International Scientific and Methodological Seminar “Modern Technologies of Teaching Foreign Languages and Russian as Foreign Languages”

On January 22, 2020, Novosibirsk State University of Architecture and Civil engineering (Sibstrin) hosted the International Scientific and Methodological Seminar “Modern Technologies of Teaching Foreign Languages and Russian as Foreign Languages”.

Not only students, but also teachers are fond of studying. The faculty members of the Department of Foreign Languages, the Department of Russian Language, and instructors of special subjects who will conduct their lectures in English gathered at NSUACE (Sibstrin) to discuss their professional problems, share methods, technologies, and best practices of foreign languages teaching. The International Scientific and Methodological Seminar was held jointly with Pavlodar State University named after S. Toraigyrov (Pavlodar, Kazakhstan). The philologists from NSTU (Novosibirsk State Technical University) and RANEPA (The Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration) were also invited.

It was the first experience of such a seminar, when the participants listened to the online lecture from Pavlodar, exchanged views with the lecturer, asked questions, and then continued their work, got acquainted with the reports of NSTU (Novosibirsk State Technical University) and RANEPA (The Russian presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration) representatives.

The international seminar was organized by R.S. Satretdinova, the Head of the Department of Foreign Languages and the Department of Russian Language, the Assistant Professor, Candidate of Philological Sciences, and I.M. Makarikhina, the Assistant Professor of the Department of Foreign Languages, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences. Much organizational and technical assistance in the preparation and conduct of the event was provided by N.S. Derepovskaya, the Director of the Institute of Pre-University Education of NSUACE (Sibstrin), and D.G. Vorotnikov, the Director of Adult Education Center. We greatly appreciate their assistance.

The participants of the seminar were welcomed by its organizer, R. S. Satretdinova. She reminded the importance of introducing modern technologies into the educational environment, the need for a creative approach in language teaching, the fact that at the leading universities many lectures are conducted in English today, and the same practice is also introduced at NSUACE (Sibstrin). She presented the first speaker, Akmaral Kanatbekovna Kairbaeva, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences of Pavlodar State University named after S. Toraigyrov (Pavlodar, Kazakhstan), the Director of the Department of Strategy, Quality Management and International Cooperation. A.K. Kairbaeva held online report in English from Pavlodar “Communicative technologies of lecture materials presentation in a foreign language”. The participants listened to the update information with a great interest. It was accompanied by the presentation in English. The experienced lecturer told about blended learning that becomes popular all over the world, about perception peculiarities of modern students, about update educational trends, about new pedagogical, psychological and technological tasks, problems and solutions. The lecture was very voluminous, rich and useful for teachers of foreign languages, who are increasingly turning to the combination of classroom education with online education, as distance learning is rapidly developing worldwide.

The natural continuation of the conversation about distance learning was the report of Marina Anatolevna Bovtenko, an authoritative scientist, Director of the Resource and Methodological Center of the Extended Education Institution of NSTU, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences. The lecture on “The Development, Linguistic and Methodological Evaluation of Electronic Interactive Learning Assignments on Foreign Languages” was focused on resources, developments, tests and assignments related to the electronic educational environment. The leading expert in the field of online education introduced the participants to the advantages and disadvantages of various educational resources on the Internet. Different types of assignments, the opportunities of interactive training were analyzed in details. It was very important to exchange experience in the field of electronic education, as the Department of Russian Language actively uses in teaching the course “The Russian Language and Speech Culture" the university resource – Moodle. The Department of Russian Language also develops online materials for Russian learning as a foreign language. The lecturer from NSTU pointed out that the teachers of foreign languages should use electronic resources, introduce them into life, and give students more creative and independent tasks.

The next reporter was Maya Andreevna Morozova, the senior teacher of the Department of Foreign Languages of the Humanitarian Faculty of NSTU. She also spoke about the creative component of modern education. In her big and detailed presentation on the topic “Video projects in the system of educational assignments in foreign languages” she told about creative approach of German teaching. When the students do not study only grammar and vocabulary, but they also do educational creative assignments in German: create posters, presentations, game and non-game videos, which can be posted on the Internet. The proposed direction to connect classroom training with electronic resources, technical and creative assignments was met with great interest because it demonstrated practical possibilities to implement blended learning.

The representative of RANEPA (The Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration) shared her work experience with foreign students. Svetlana Sergeevna Lopatina, the Director of the Russian Language Center for Foreign Students of RANEPA, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, told about the work of the new organization. The title of her report was “The Center of the Russian Language of Siberian Institute of Management as the Branch of RANEPA under the President of the Russian Federation as the Means of Sociocultural Adaptation of Foreign Students”. She told that within the last two years much work had been done on adaptation and training of foreign students, the classes on Russian as a Foreign Language are conducted. Different conferences, competitions, webinars, and Olympiads for foreign schoolchildren, applicants and students are held. Nowadays 92 foreign students from five countries study at this university. The speaker pointed out that intending foreign students of the university are chosen by their progress: the winners of Olympiads and competitions in the Russian language in China, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. There are free and paid places for foreign students, but everyone is accepted and taught creatively, applying the variety of modern methods. Of course, the participants of the seminar had a great variety of themes to discuss.

The Department of Russian Language of NSUACE (Sibstrin) has been working with foreign students for more than 40 years, and the representatives of 64 countries have studied at the university. Our department publishes the training aids on Russian as a Foreign Language, develops an electronic resource, conducts extracurricular and classroom sessions, and does a lot to adapt foreign students to Russian realities. Another complex and unique work of teachers of the Department of Russian Language of NSUACE (Sibstrin) is to train foreign bachelor degree students and master’s degree students in scientific style of speech, and the language support of foreigners at all stages of study at the university. The students feel this concern and respond to good studies, new achievements in student life.

At the end of the International Scientific and Methodological Seminar there was an exchange of views, the results were resumes. Many teachers noted that such meetings are necessary for teachers of foreign languages, that the format and content of the seminar can be expanded and complicated, that it is very useful to listen to lectures in English and learn new experiences of colleagues and new world trends in education.
